EUFOR RCA: EU mission in Central African Republic (DIEEEO136-2014)

The deployment of the EU mission in Central African Republic, EUFOR RCA, has represented a substantial improvement of the security in Bangui, especially in the 3rd and 5th district, epicentre of violence in the city, whose security is mainly provided by the Spanish military and police contingent. However, the popularity of this operation and its achievements have been overshadowed by a new outbreak of violence in October. The root of these serious incidents are in the political stagnation and weakness of the transitional government. Once again, the last events in Bangui proves that the international military and police action in Central Africa should be accompanied by the end of the deadlock of the political process. Both Central African authorities and international community should take definitive steps to achieve a political agreement. Nevertheless, this agreement should not be paid with the high price of impunity.
